The cobalt drills display a high red hardness, allowing for speeds up to 30 percent greater than conventional M2 high-speed steel drills. They are particularly effective in drilling tough, high-tensile strength materials such as stainless steel, Inconel, and titanium. The 135-degree split point is self-centering and reduces thrust, further enhancing the performance of these drills.

Cobalt steel tools are similar to high-speed steel, but with more cobalt added for improved performance when cutting harder metals like stainless steel or nickel alloys. The gold oxide surface treatment is thinner than the more commonly used black oxide, and the performance of the coated tools is similar to that of uncoated tools.

The round shanks of these drills allow for use with a wide variety of tool-holding systems. When run in a counterclockwise direction (right-hand cut), the spiral-fluted tools effectively evacuate chips up and out of the cut, reducing the risk of clogging.
