Cobalt steel tools, manufactured to National Aerospace standard 907, are designed to provide enhanced performance when drilling tough, high tensile strength materials such as PH stainless steel, inconel, and titanium. Compared to High-Speed Steel drills, these cobalt tools display higher red hardness, which allows for speeds up to 30 percent greater.

The cobalt steel composition is similar to high-speed steel, but with an increased cobalt content for improved cutting capabilities on harder metals like stainless steel or nickel alloys. This improved performance is achieved through the use of heat-resistant cobalt as the primary material.

To help identify these specialized cobalt steel tools, a gold oxide surface treatment is applied, which is a thinner oxide layer compared to the more commonly used black oxide. This surface treatment does not significantly impact the performance of the tools, which remains similar to that of uncoated counterparts.

The round shanks of these drill bits allow for use with a wide variety of toolholding systems, providing flexibility in their application. When run in a counterclockwise direction (right-hand cut), the spiral fluted design of the tools helps to evacuate chips up and out of the cut, reducing the risk of clogging.
